Hitting Long Irons

Golf Club

Wish you could hit a perfect iron shot onto the green? Better yet, a long iron shot to make eagle? Now with some practice you can.

To begin, you want to line up with the ball in the middle of your stance. When hitting with a club like your four iron, make sure you're not crowding the ball. Stand far enough back so you can reach out and hit the ball, but not too the point you're straining your muscles to do so.

Now that your stance is correct, you'll want to work on your back swing. The back swing is a crucial step in hitting a good shot. If you want to hit a good shot you must start out good to end good.

First begin by bringing the club back pretty much parallel to your body. If you bring the club too far inside or outside, you will ultimately end up pushing or pulling the ball.

After bringing the club head back slightly begin to hinge your wrists and bring the club back on a steeper path. The reason for this is as you make contact with the ball when hitting an iron you want to as they say "pinch the ball against the turf". In other words, you're not scooping up the ball. You want to make contact just as you're ending your downswing. By making contact with the ball like this, you're allowing the loft of the club to push the ball into the air.

Finish with turning your body and keeping the club on the same plane. A good finish will ensure extra yardage.
